About this deal

Due to the loss of light that occurs underwater even in the clearest waters, they developed a then new dual carbon-arc lamp flash housed in a way it can fire in water. This is the last model on the list to feature a fixed-length lens, but the smallest max aperture of the bunch at f/4. It is also a camera to use when enjoying anything where there is likely to be water from snow sports through to even street photography in wet weather. On the original strap there was a little nub that (hazy memory) either stuck out of the rubber “canon” mini neck-rest, or was on a little rubber slider attached to the strap.

e. in the fridge, so that the chemicals do not degrade with temperature changes throughout the year. Excellent contrast, very good sharpness, ok the very extreme edges were a touch soft, and the exposures were spot on. The (New) Sure Shot looks incredibly similar to the original, and the majority of the features are unchanged.

I also used the Sure Shot AF-7 for the shitty camera challenge; a film photography event that was run on Twitter. You’ll have an even wider range of available film speeds with 25 – 3200 ISO, but the trade off is the reduced max shutter speed of just 1/250. Choose an ISO setting that's appropriate for the film you're using and the lighting you'll be shooting in. The good thing about using free cameras is that it forces you to try something different that you might otherwise shy away from.

Another great success, the Canon Supreme Sure Shot won a handful of awards for its thoughtful design. But I also knew that if my shots came back under-exposed, badly focused, or otherwise botched by an inept, old camera, I’d end up hating it. Based on this comparison with a mainline Canon zoom, I’m willing to bet if you put it up against compact zooms of the era, or any era come to it, this would, in all probability, come out tops still. Side note: The SureShot uses the same battery as the EOS 1 – series cameras when not using the speed booster grips. But, I thought there must be something out there still that had a nice fixed focal length, a wide f2. It becomes obvious quickly from the middle but you need to remember that in water the subject must be quite central. When I heard the motor work in the water I relaxed a bit and we had a ball taking silly pictures of each other. After a recent foray into my parents loft (attic) I happened upon my mother’s old holiday camera, the Canon Sureshot M.

I’d like readers who go on to purchase their own Ca non Sure Shot A1 to be armed with some useful information prior to the shoot. It is encased in a waterproof lightweight plastic body utilising rubber seals at both the camera back and the battery compartments. The idea behind these dual-lens modes was that the wider lens was for snapshots and landscapes, the closer lens was for more flattering portraits. Sure, there’s only one dial and it’s only got five settings (four, if we don’t count “OFF”), but knowing when and how to use these settings will make at least a little of a difference. but to then fully press the button to take the shot takes a lot of pressure and sometimes you miss the shot because of it.

Great lens, af focus scale in the VF but best of all, a simple switch on the front that lets you turn the flash on or off at a whim. This decision may come down to brand loyalty, an aesthetic tingle, or a fondness or loathing for white plastic. My love for underwater cameras and unusual camera design had me hedging that I’d find a new friend in the Canon. Its main function is for plugging into the exposure lens (just under the taking lens) so that the flash is forced to come on as daylight-fill flash (also incredibly fiddly). Since the battery was dead, I argued that I couldn’t check it worked, but when I got home I popped a fresh battery in and it did! It also shows you where the edge of your frame will be so that you can line up your shots accurately.
