Two monuments represent two fundamental cultures: the Alcazaba represents the Arab culture, and the Basilica of Santa Eulalia represents the Roman one. This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building. Do not leave Cáceres without eating in one of the restaurants in the Plaza Mayor, where you can try some of the typical Extremaduran dishes such as Iberian pork, lamb, the typical “migas” and the traditional and tasty cheese “Torta del Casar.” From Asia came silk, porcelain, ivory and spices. From the Americas, of course, came silver – rivers of the metal. “The numbers are staggering: by far the bulk of the world’s silver emanated from Spanish America, and of that amount, about a third (other estimates are higher) ended up directly or indirectly in China.”

You cannot miss the Duero Romanesque Cathedral and its Romanesque churches such as San Cipriano, La Magdalena, or Santa María de la Horta. My main goal was just education, first. I’ve been teaching for many years now, since 1997 (I think!). I’ve done several of my own published books, but they’ve always been books on just showing my art, and people have always asked me, ‘Hey, when are you going to put out a How To book?’ I knew it would be a big task, but I always had the intention that someday I was going to put together a How To book, and just explain character design in a simple way. Mérida is an emblematic city and the epicenter of the Silver Way, which was once the ancient Emerita Augusta.A great character designer asks questions and knows how to transform information into a clear design. Remember that you can also do the route the other way around, starting in Gijón and ending in Seville. Here’s a list of the main stages divided by the autonomous community. Andalusia You spoke a little bit about your teaching. With all the different classes you offer – your workshops , your academy , your one-to-one mentoring – you’re clearly a natural teacher. What made you decide to want to teach?

Each chapter leads you further towards the goal of creating great characters. It starts off by explaining what’s required to become a great designer and what character design actually means. Its current configuration is the product of the different artistic movements of each era and the character of a great city that it had for many centuries. In this impressive city, you can feel and visualize the Roman influence and visit some of the architectural monuments of great cultural interest. Visigothic, Arab, medieval, and modern features are also very present, which makes it a unique place. What is this character’s history? What’s their story? How would that affect the character’s design? Their clothes, their posture, their behavior? Photo credit to Concept Art Empire Salamanca is one of the most essential stops on the Silver route. Salamanca is a city of great beauty that has played a significant role in the history of our country. It comes down to experiences. In a year from now, you might go somewhere or see a different culture and all of a sudden you’re learning from that, or maybe you see some artwork that you’ve never seen before. I think one of my biggest things that I’ve learnt that I really truly believe comes down to that quote that we have heard: ‘Life’s a journey, not a destination’. Stop thinking that getting to any one particular place or one particular job is going to be the pinnacle, and going to be the ‘Oh my God I’ve made it’ moment. You never make it really. You’re going to have successes, you’re going to have failures, you’re going to have all of that, and it’s all just part of the journey. I think one of the greatest things that I have really come to understand is the true meaning of that – that there is no destination to this, there is no final result, and when you’re open to that, and accept that every day is just another part of a lesson learned, it just makes life in general a lot more exciting, a lot more freeing, and you’re not chasing anything anymore. I think when you’re younger, you tend to just be chasing things, you think the grass is always greener – ‘Oh if I only got that job!’ – but no, that’s not it. So just keep learning, keep growing, keep moving forward, and that’s all I think one can ever do in this industry – stop expecting final results. There are none, it doesn’t exist, it’s not real. At the same time in China, paper money, a Chinese invention from the Tang dynasty, had proven unstable due to overprinting and was all but abandoned. This assertion is not fully explained, and is I think an overreach, a constant temptation when looking at history with one particular focus. I was familiar with the story of the Manila galleons and silver, so for me the most interesting part of the book was the descriptions of Mexico. I hadn’t realized how prosperous and cosmopolitan it had been. According to the authors, “for two centuries, Mexico was arguably the centre of the world, the place where Asia, Europe and the Americas all met, and where people intermingled and exchanged everything from genes to textiles.”

Zamora is a city that transmits peace as you stroll through the old town, which is very well preserved, with illustrious palaces, incredible mansions, and impressive churches. The designer not only has to understand how to construct a character, but also must develop solutions along the way, by building something from nothing. If you are interested in the history of Roman times, do not miss the Archaeological Park of Campa de Torres, the Roman Villa of Veranes, or the thermal baths of Campo Valdes. This route has different options, as it can be done from south to north (Seville - Gijón) and from north to south (Gijón - Seville).
