Otherwise, both still work but you will need to make your flash adjustments from the flash vice the camera menu. In short, because of their relatively low cost, I will for the moment continue using them for my property photography work as they are relatively replaceable. The SB-910 offers selection from three illumination patterns (standard, even, center-weighted), allowing users to choose the pattern most appropriate for the scene. The reason the power of the SB-910 is useful to everyone who doesn't need it is that the SB-910 packs a big enough power inverter to recharge from a full-power blast in just two seconds, so at normal or even relatively high power levels, the SB-910 will always be ready to fire with no waiting. Last Update 2017: Nikon no longer sells the SB 900 or 910 and is moving to wireless RF flashes for their future remote flash and I for one can not wait for the benefit of the newer technology.

Although I do like the slightly smaller footprint of the SB-700 I would rethink my original purchase of the SB-700 if I knew the SB-5000 was coming out. The simple coding on the gels allows the newer cameras (D3 and D700 at this point) to make white balance adjustments that are correct for the new color of the flash. Of course, the SB-910 seems to be better than the SB-900, but very serious advantage of the SB-900 above the SB-910 is the fact that the SB-900 can turn off thermal protection and sound.Really, the only thing that ever goes wrong with flashes is either you drop them, or you explode them. These are the number of full-power dumps Nikon claims you can get if you wait as long as 30 seconds for it to recycle. In my experience the old Auto Aperture mode is more consistent and reliable than i-TTL - direct, bounced, diffused, whatever. This is also very bad, especially when shooting important - imagine - the flash works, but does not give a light pulse.

Yes, the SB900 has issues with shutting down due to the overheat protection feature, and yes if you turn off the overheat protection feature you may have zero issues…or you may explode your flash! Creativity can be learned and practiced, and most importantly it's absolutely possible to devise the circumstances in which you're able to be the most creative.if you are limited in funds and need a powerful flash you can find use SB-910 for half the cost of an SB-5000. Not just because the SB700 is so awesome, but also for one other reason that I need to mention before we wrap up. I suppose that's a good thing, but there's really no reason why a critical switch like this has to be made as small as possible on a flash that's grown in size. Well, I am here to tell you that it is not, in fact for anyone who has to use a flash on their camera for 8-12+ hours per day on a regular basis, such as wedding photography, I highly recommend, no I ONLY recommend, the SB700. every photographer seems to have forgotten about the SB800, and now the new SB700 which seems to be deemed only acceptable for amateurs.
